ThinkData Ed Summer Camp Week 2: True Colors
July 13-17, 2026
True Colors: Decoding Personality Through Center & Spread
Students move from “I think this is true” to “The data supports this conclusion.” This week strengthens statistical reasoning by using measures of center and spread to compare groups, interpret variability, and make defensible claims with evidence.
By the end of Week 2, students will be able to:
- ✔ Use mean, median, MAD, and IQR to describe distributions
- ✔ Compare groups using numerical summaries and boxplots
- ✔ Interpret variability and typical values in context
- ✔ Subset datasets and analyze specific populations
- ✔ Communicate statistical findings using evidence
Session Highlights
In this camp session, students use mathematics as a lens to interpret human behavior and group dynamics, turning numbers into meaningful insights.
Advanced Comparison
Go beyond a simple average to understand “the middle” and “the range” in any group, such as comparing athletic performance or social trends.
Identifying "The Norm"
Use math to define what is typical versus what is rare, helping students make sense of variability in personality traits or test scores.
Targeted Analysis
Learn how to “drill down” into specific groups (subsets) to see how different populations behave or think differently.
Making Defensible Claims
Use quantitative evidence to support a point, ensuring their conclusions are rooted in data rather than just gut feelings.
About ThinkData Ed
ThinkData Ed (TDE) is a leading provider of data science education, offering engaging curriculum, expert instruction, and technology that help students succeed in today’s data-driven world. Founded by the lead authors of the nationally implemented Introduction to Data Science (IDS) course, TDE creates learning experiences that make data science accessible, relevant, and exciting.
In collaboration with the Data Science Education Center at the UCLA Department of Statistics and Data Science, and informed by faculty and staff who include founders and fellows of the American Statistical Association, TDE ensures its programs reflect high-quality research and the highest standards in the field. Through hands-on learning, students build real skills in analyzing data, solving problems, and understanding the world around them.
