If This, Then That: Predicting the World With Probability

In this summer camp session, uncertainty becomes something students can reason through. Students learn probability, simulation, and decision-making tools that show up in everything from forecasting to game design to fairness.

By the end of Week 3, students will be able to:

  • ✔ Clean and prepare real datasets for analysis
  • ✔ Use two-way tables to analyze categorical associations
  • ✔ Calculate and interpret conditional probabilities
  • ✔ Build and run simulations to estimate likelihood
  • ✔ Use permutations and combinations to count outcomes
  • ✔ Apply probability reasoning to assess fairness and independence

Essential Concepts

By attending this camp session, students gain tools to navigate uncertainty using probability and simulation to make informed predictions and make evidence-based decisions.

Data Preparation

Learn the “dirty work” of data science – cleaning and organizing messy information so it’s actually usable for decision-making.

Risk Assessment

Calculate the likelihood of events occurring, a skill used in everything from weather forecasting to financial planning and insurance.

Predictive Modeling

Build digital simulations to test “what if” scenarios, allowing students to predict outcomes before they happen.

Fairness Auditing

Apply logic to determine if a process (like a game, a lottery, or an algorithm) is truly fair or if it is skewed toward a specific result.

About ThinkData Ed

Series of connected lights

ThinkData Ed (TDE) is a leading provider of data science education, offering engaging curriculum, expert instruction, and technology that help students succeed in today’s data-driven world. Founded by the lead authors of the nationally implemented Introduction to Data Science (IDS) course, TDE creates learning experiences that make data science accessible, relevant, and exciting.

In collaboration with the Data Science Education Center at the UCLA Department of Statistics and Data Science, and informed by faculty and staff who include founders and fellows of the American Statistical Association, TDE ensures its programs reflect high-quality research and the highest standards in the field. Through hands-on learning, students build real skills in analyzing data, solving problems, and understanding the world around them.
